Full Tour Description

Although only 133 square miles (344 sq km), Grenada boasts over 170 bird species. With mangroves, wetlands, grasslands, a volcanic crater lake, beaches, sheltered bays and the Grenadine archipelago, there are many ideal habitats for resident and migratory birds. The beautiful location and abundance of birds make it a top destination for birding enthusiasts and nature lovers of all ages, and this Grenada bird watching tour from Caribbean Horizons will not disappoint. Grenada is home to an endemic bird species, the Grenada dove (Liptotilla wellsi) and shares the hook-billed kite (Condroherux uncinatus mirus) with Trinidad. Other regional endemics are the Grenada flycatcher, Lesser Antillean tanager, Lesser Antillean bullfinch and yellow-bellied Elenia. The best chance of seeing the Grenada Dove is at the Mount Hartman National Park, where this tour starts, in the still of the early morning. With a population of about 200 doves, there is a good chance of sightings, and your guide will lead you through the dry forest and mangroves, listening for the distinctive call, usually 8 seconds apart. The park also has two saltwater ponds frequented by migratory birds. Stop at the park’s visitor centre with photos, illustrations and displays offering fascinating information on the birds, snakes, insects and other animals found in the park. After a short drive, the next stop is the Woburn-Clarke’s Court Bay Marine Protected Area, where there is a viewing platform overlooking the bay and mangroves. This is a great spot to see migratory birds as well as crabs. Read more about Grenada birdwatching and see photos of the bird species found here at Caribbean Birding Trail.

There are many other birding hotspots in Grenada to explore, such as the mangroves at La Sagesse on the east coast, Levera National Park and Lake Antoine in the north and the Grand Etang National Park in the centre of the island. On the west coast, fishing villages attract boobies, and frigates circle in search of a free meal.
