Full Tour Description
The tri-island state of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique offers two carnivals, so you’ve got double the chance to revel in the festivities, depending on when you visit. Each island offers different traditions and events, but both guarantee an unforgettable cultural experience.
Carriacou Carnival Package
Carnival in Carriacou takes place just before the start of Lent, in late February or early March. Witness the unique Shakespeare Mas, where brightly dressed Pierrots engage in a battle of wits quoting lines from the Bard himself. Colourful street parades through the main town Hillsborough and open-air soca concerts complete the experience.
Grenada Carnival Package
On the mainland, Grenada’s Spicemas Carnival is held the second weekend in August. The build-up includes soca concerts in the national stadium, a beauty pageant to crown the ‘Carnival Queen’, and lots of parties, day and night – both at sea (party cruises) and on land. The highlight for many is J’ouvert, when thousands take to the streets covered in colourful paint and black oil, including the famous Jab Jabs. Then Monday Night Mas is a spectacle of light as revellers parade through the streets with glowing lights. The following day, glow sticks are swapped for feathers and sequins, as lavish costumes are paraded through the streets of St. George’s, all to the beat of pulsating soca music.
